The Estate, which has original title deed dated 1912, was granted to a band of local planters hailing from Kuruvinakunnel and Kallarackal families by the rulers of Travancore.
J. R. Vincent, the prominent rubber planter in Mundakayam Valley, bought the initial clearing of over seven hundred acres in 1926, and named it the Downton Estate. The name was given because it was villages near Southampton England were the Vincent’s used to go cycling in the childhood. He built a colonial style ranch home, the Downton Bungalow in 1930, The Downton Estate was brought by the K.I. Varkey Karimpanal in 1947 from his brother A D Vincent .The bungalow and its adjoining land are presently with the relatives of the Karimpanal family, the Late Mr. Augustine Mathew Kayyalakakom and his brothers.
The thickly wooded evergreen forests around the bungalow are the natural habitat of varied flora and fauna. Here the plantation crops of the Downton Estate and the greens of nature coexist in perfect harmony. The Bungalow is situated on a clearing surrounded by cardamom plantation on one side and a natural forest on the other side.
Accommodation
We offer two double bedrooms and a dormitory for eight persons with period furniture and modern facilities.
Food Services
• South Indian or continental food is served
• Barbeque is done on its lawns.
Activities
• Know more about the planting and processing of spices.
• Plantation visit include a round through the estate by foot or jeep.
• Jeep safaris in the early morning through the main road public road out of the estate boundary.
• Night safari within the plantation is being done at midnight sure for some wildlife sighting.
The adventurous can always opt for a trekking through the plantation or take a guided trek through the thickly wooded forest nearby (with prior permission from forest officials.)
